Street Food Survival Guide: Shanghai's Best Breakfast Spots

Breakfast in Shanghai

Shanghainese take their mornings seriously. While tourists sleep in, the city's best food happens between 6-9 AM at street stalls, tiny shops, and neighborhood institutions that have fed generations.

The Essential Four

1. Jianbing (煎饼)

This savory crepe is Shanghai's answer to the breakfast burrito. The best ones have:

  • Crispy fried dough (youtiao) inside
  • Fresh egg spread thin on the griddle
  • Sweet bean paste AND spicy sauce
  • Optional: extra crispy wonton skin

Where: The cart outside Jing'an Temple station (exit 3) has a line for a reason.

2. Xiaolongbao (小笼包)

Yes, soup dumplings for breakfast. Fight me.

Where: Jia Jia Tang Bao on Huanghe Road. Get there by 7 AM or wait an hour.

3. Cifantuan (粢饭团)

Sticky rice rolled around youtiao, pork floss, and pickled vegetables. The ultimate handheld breakfast.

Where: Any stall with a line of office workers in suits.

4. Fresh Soy Milk (豆浆)

Sweet or savory, hot or cold. The real stuff is made fresh and tastes nothing like the boxed version.

Where: Yonghe Dawang for consistency, street stalls for adventure.

My Morning Route

When friends visit, I take them on this 90-minute walking breakfast:

  1. 6:30 AM: Jianbing near Jing'an Temple
  2. 7:00 AM: Walk through the park watching tai chi
  3. 7:30 AM: Cifantuan from the stall near Nanjing Road
  4. 8:00 AM: Xiaolongbao at Jia Jia Tang Bao
  5. 8:30 AM: Fresh soy milk, find a bench, people watch

Total cost: Under 50 RMB. Memories: Priceless.
