Hiking the Tiger Leaping Gorge: Everything You Need to Know
The Trail Overview
The Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡) is a canyon on the Jinsha River, where the water drops over 200 meters through a series of rapids. The hiking trail follows the northern rim, offering heart-stopping views into one of the world's deepest gorges.
Route Options
High Road (Recommended)

This is the classic route, following ancient paths along the cliff face.

A paved road mainly used by tour buses. Skip it unless you're short on time.
Day-by-Day Breakdown
Day 1: Qiaotou to Halfway Guesthouse
Start: Qiaotou (桥头)
Distance: ~12km
Time: 5-7 hours
The notorious "28 bends" come early and will test your lungs. Take breaks. Drink water. The views are worth every step. Naxi Family Guesthouse offers a legendary dinner and beds with gorge views.

Easier walking with more spectacular viewpoints. Detour down to the water at Tiger Leaping Stone if you have energy—it adds 2 hours but gets you close to the rushing rapids.

My Experience
I've hiked the gorge four times, in every season. Each time reveals something new—different light, different wildflowers, different conversations with fellow hikers. It remains my favorite multi-day walk in China.
The combination of physical challenge, natural beauty, and simple guesthouse hospitality creates something special. This isn't a theme park hike. It's real adventure.
